Why you can trust it with your microphone
Dictaphone is built and maintained by Alex Chuev, a web developer. It started as a personal itch: every free recorder on the web wanted an account, an upload, or both — and none of them let you re-record just the sentence you fluffed.
Recording your own voice is a private act. A tool that asks for your microphone should not also ask you to trust a server with what it hears, so this one does not have a server to trust. There is no account system, no analytics on your audio and no upload step — not as a policy, but as an architecture.
Do not take that on faith. Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and record something. You will see the page and its fonts load, and then nothing further. Your audio is captured, mixed and encoded entirely inside the tab, so the download comes out of your own machine's memory rather than from a server. The privacy page spells out the rest.
It is not a digital audio workstation. There is no noise removal, no effects rack and no cloud library. It records voice, lets you patch the bad parts, balances a few layers and gives you a file — and it tries to do only that well.
